Humility Before Honor

Before honor comes humility. That is how it was with our Lord Jesus Christ. He humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name. Philippians 2: 8, 9.

The story is told of the emperor Ferdinand 1, who instructed his artists to paint him praying at the foot of the cross of Christ. The painters hesitated, objecting that a man as mighty as their emperor should be represented in art as kneeling before the cross. The emperor insisted that they paint him humble and contrite before the cross, for, said he, “It is this crucified Savior that has given me this scepter, and this crown.

Honor and praise are ascribed to those who with genuine meekness and self-forgetfulness accomplish some work of unselfishness wherever they are. Success in some fields require the touch of a genius. Yet if the precious grace of humility is lacking, their work will be marred. Recognition should never be sought. God will take care of that. And if there is not a hall of fame awaiting us here on earth, there will be a place of honor among the redeemed along with a crown of immortal life (My thoughts with Just for Today, by D.A. Delafield page 62).
