Peter and Jesus

Peter conversed, dined, and journeyed with Jesus for some time. He witnessed Christ’s miracles and was even willing to die with the Master. But despite his close association with Jesus, he did not develop a genuine faith prior to his true conversion. Thus his lack of such faith yielded confidence more toward self and less toward God. When he finally denied Jesus the Savior’s grief over Peter’s self-sufficiency brought him to repentance. Peter then came to a turning point, and bitterly he repented of his sin. The light of God’s glory from Christ’s countenance broke through the veil of darkness and changed Peter’s heart. Through that light he was able to see his own wretchedness.
Peter followed the teachings of the Scriptures, but it all availed him nothing until the Daystar rose in his heart, revealing to him his mistakes. When men see their own nothingness they are prepared to be clothed with the righteousness of Christ. That’s when faith will undo trust in self and will turn it upon God (My thoughts with quotes from Conflict and Courage, p. 321 and The Faith I Live By, p. 111).
